The Limone Costa d’Amalfi PGI is something more than a simple cultivation. It is a medical remedy that allows to purify and regenerate the body and is essential to use in the kitchen to flavor our dishes. The name of the variety “Sfusato Amalfitano” allowed the product to get the Protected Geographical Indication “Limone Costa d’Amalfi” because contains some important features: the tapered shape of the fruit (from which the term “sfusato”), a deep yellow color, the fragrance intoxicating and the area where it was grown that differentiates it from the others: the Amalfi Coast. The countries in which it is produced are 13 and precisely Amalfi, Atrani, Cetara, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Maiori, Minori, Praiano, Positano, Ravello, Scala, Tramonti and Vietri sul Mare.
Currently the Amalfi lemon is cultivated on about 400 hectares, with an average annual harvest of about 100,000 tons. The cultivation of lemon also plays a vital role in the hydrogeology protection of the territory occupying the slopes steeper and it is a prominent feature of the landscape of the Amalfi Coast, called by many “Divine Coast”, and that owes its charm and above all the beauty, and the perfume of her lemon groves.
Lemon was introduced in Campania by the Arabs, during their expansion and their achievements. But the real spread of the lemon, in Amalfi, occurred mainly due to the ascertained need to have this fruit as a result of the discovery of its value in the fight against scurvy, an illness caused by vitamin C deficiency, of which citrus notoriously rich. For Amalfitans, famous people of navigators, was crucial to have, on their ships, to a large stock of this precious fruit Already in XI century The Amalfi Republic decreed that on board ships there were always provided with such benefits. From 1400 to 1800 the demand, even from other countries, was particularly high in Northern European countries. So agriculture it intensified creating the famous terraces of lemon trees, and the installations supported by scaffolding built with chestnut poles located along the coast.
