The pizza’s story is long and unsure. The term ‘pizza’ first appeared “in a Latin text from the southern Italian town of Gaeta; but in 16th century Naples a flatbread was referred to as a pizza.
The first “pomodoro and mozzarella” pizza was prepared in Napoli around mid 1800, during the visit of Italian King Umberto I and his wife, the Queen Margherita.
The story tell that Raffaele Esposito, the best pizza chef of that time, made three different pizzas for the King and the Queen, and one of these was with tomato puree and mozzarella.
The Queen really loved this kind of pizza, and she wanted to thank and praise in writing the pizza chef.
In exchange, Esposito named his creation with the Queen’s name. Since then, tomato puree and mozzarella pizza is called Margherita.
Pizza has become Traditional Specialty preserved by the European Union in 2010.
